But honestly, the newest and remodeled commercial centers have moved to a style that is glassy, light, bright and neutral, especially whites, creams and putties. (teals, corals, and pinks are the biggest offenders) Of course taste is up to each of us, and if it feels good then good for you. I'm just not too inspired to feel a place has much to offer me if I don't see and feel the 'cutting edge'.

Btw, did Jim Wilson and Associates build Northpark as he did Metrocenter.

No, RTKL Associates, Inc. built Northpark, a firm out of Baltimore.

I visited Belk and the carpet looked 30 years old. The staff was incompetent and it was a poor shopping experience. A dying mall!

I saw that the OP mentioned that H&M opened at the mall, but they're getting less picky as time goes on. They've opened in several less than fantastic properties as of recent in both the US and Canada. Chapel Hills Mall in Colorado Springs, and Station Mall in Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario are both good example.

H&M is certainly no longer a 'catch'. It is good to see national names sign on to properties, but those that target teens have vicarious lifespans . (teens have zero loyalty; successful centers are seeking businesses serving the 'thirty-somethings')
It is a low price point business, and I suppose the foreign connection adds some allure because otherwise we would call it keep clothes just like Old Navy et al.
