Mississippi Fair Commission Sues the City of Jackson | WJTV.com

I think it's time for the state fair to find a new host city.

What host city would you have in mind?

Gulfport or Biloxi. I do know that when the Mid South fair moved from Memphis to Southaven, the attendance numbers have dropped significantly. So that's something to think about. But I think Biloxi or Gulfport could handle it.

Yeah, I'm thinking either Biloxi or Gulfport. Tupelo...maybe...but I think it's very unlikely to move to Tupelo.

It's just a matter of time before it leaves.
What will the excuse be when it does?

Or . . . The State could foot the bill for security at its own event, the State Fair. Instead, it asks the city to foot the bill for it (a handout). Doing the appropriate thing here (paying for a service) would be much less expensive than the cost of building a new fairgrounds.

People keep saying Jackson should live within its means, but when it does that, it gets hit with a lawsuit. Amazing.

Hold the State Fair on the coast? And isolate itself from the population north of Jackson, and most people in the Jackson area? Some people may drive 3 hours to the fair, but no one's driving 6 hours. My guess would be the turnout would drop by 2/3rds.

If Brandon, Flowood, or Madison want to build a fairground, have at it. I would love for Jackson to demolish the current fairground and coliseum, and build a real indoor facility so more popular musical acts would visit here. Let the fairground, and all the smelly rodeos, be in the boondocks.

So the city wants to host it but not provide security.

In a nutshell, yes. The city does not want to foot the bill for a service the State should pay for (and a bill that the State used to pay for). Just like the State wants to have its event (at its property, the fairgrounds) but have the Jackson Police Department either 1) pull police officers from patrolling neighborhoods elsewhere, thus compromising the safety of its residents; or 2) foot the bill to pay overtime, thus compromising its budget. The State should pay for its security, which would be much cheaper than building a new fairgrounds elsewhere.

Madison2013, do you really think this is not a frivolous lawsuit?
