I had a phone interview yesterday. The hiring manager asked me to come in for an in-person interview next week. He said he will show me around which is the next phase. Has anyone else experience doing a phone interview and then went to the company where they showed you around? Could this be base on how they make their decisions with other applicants?

I'm thinking maybe after they pick the right candidates after the phone interviews, they do this do decide who's the right fit for the job.

We do phone screenings followed by in-house interviews. Not all phone screens make it to the interview. So, yeah, pretty standard practice.

Are you questioning a tour as part of the interview?

We typically give tours to our applicants. We want them to be well informed in regards to our organization so that they can make an appropriate decision.

I do not apply for entry or mid-level positions, and am typically looking for a position in a national market, so I have almost always been given a tour of the workplace during my interviews, as well as a tour of the local area.

We do this too, with far fewer making it to the face-to-face interviews. We don't do a tour though, until after the contingent offer has been made, while awaiting the background/reference checks. At that point someone could still back out if they didn't like the size of the cubicles, or the number of restrooms.

This is pretty typical....all of the jobs I have interviewed for in the last 20 years have involved at least a phone screening before an in-person interview. Most oif the time there will also be a phone interview with the hiring manager between the screening and the in-person interview. And you are right....each step winnows down the pool.

Thanks, everyone for the feedback. Hemlock, I would agree with you about giving tours after the offer. When I first got my first job, they didn't show me around until after I started on day 1. I'm pretty sure this is now standard for most companies now to show a tour on an in-person interview.
