Since graduating college three years ago, I have had two part-time jobs and one volunteer position that was basically temporary but varied hours wise (30-40 hours a week for a period of 4 months). I have been struggling to find full-time work for over two years now.
On my resume, I list my current position, then the volunteer position, then the first job I had after college. I worked hard at the volunteer position I held and it gave me skills that are absolutely transferable to full-time jobs. Is it inappropriate of me not to specify it was a volunteer position?
I would specify it was a volunteer job to help explain away the very short tenure. You are not doing yourself a favor by letting them come to their own conclusion about why you are no longer there.
I would specify it is a volunteer position. First, it's more honest; second, if they ask to verify your position you don't find yourself in an awkward position.
I think volunteering can make you stand out in and of itself. I've always listed them separately from my paid employment; currently I use the heading "Community Involvement."
