I'll be moving early next year to a new state. I'm hoping to find a job there prior to moving. My question is: how far in advance should I begin applying for jobs? I don't want to apply too early, but I also know that the process can take a long time sometimes.
You've apparently decided to move somewhere within a year. You should already be looking. Assume it will take longer to find a job than you think it will. If something develops, tell prospective employers you are mobile and will cover the cost of the move yourself.
TBH, with almost no information about where you're moving and why, how transferable your profession happens to be, what profession you want to be in if you aren't in it now, how advanced you happen to be in your profession (probably fewer opportunities at the director level versus the entry level), the logistics that will be involved in your move (uprooting family, kids in school, selling property, etc) it is very hard to make useful suggestions.

Edited to add: you said early next year? Next year is only about 6 months away!
Employers discriminate against out of state candidates, so you are at a disadvantage.
