Boy, I have to agree with you on the meat from Sam's Club and Walmart, hiknapster! I brought home some real losers before I finally gave up.

The only food I buy at either now is national brand packaged dry goods. No eggs, milk, lettuce, etc. Been burned too many times.

I have never heard of Frye's. What part of the country are they located in?

BJ's is pretty good. They were still great 5 yrs. ago when we left MA, but I haven't been to the new one in Alpharetta, GA as yet. It's about a 40 mile drive south for me. Guess I'm not that anxious to save $10.00. I would just put it in my gas tank!

A Costco would be welcome to most, I think.

Am I the only person who wonders what the owner of this liquor store will do for a living now that Costco is coming to town?

He'll have to adapt. He can either slash his prices or offer excellent personal service that big boxes like Costco can't. Just as mom-and-pop hardware stores are surviving against behemoths like Home Depot and Lowe's, there's no reason for a savvy entrepreneurial liquor store owner to go out of business just because Costco is in town. And if he does go out of business, it's his own fault, not Costco's.

I go to a mom-and-pop when I want personal service or do not want to deal with crowds, and sometimes for both reasons.

I also get positively giddy when I think that another big box is going to give the Waltons a run for their money.

It's nice to have choices.

Amen!!! And I think a lot of people are like us, hiknapster. At least I hope so.

Please give them a run for their money so that Costco will see the benefit of having stores in other TN metro areas like Chattanooga!!!

To answer what a Frys is, it's an electronics store that has just about everything, the equivilant of a costco for electronics (stereo, computer,tv etc).
We have costco here and it hasn't hurt the liquor stores in the least. When liquor is regulated to only be sold in state stores (like here) costco doesn't get the license to sell anything other than beer and wine so the stores have a lock on that.
As for meat, we got to know a manager and after many long chats found out costco only buys the top of the choice grade of meat. They buy so much that they dictate what is coming in the doors, same with veggies. Most other stores just get what they get.
They frequently turn away stuff at the loading dock if it doesn't look right.

As for Wal Mart, my wife currently works for them and when we move it will be the end of that thank goodness. What a bunch of cheap, low down @)$*$!!!! They hired her on telling her she was at "the top tier" of wages. 6 months later they advertise that they're hiring people STARTING at between $1 and $3 more and hour than she's currently getting. Man am I steamed! They can't figure out why people don't stay and they can't get any new hires. Gee, wonder why???? This town is small enough that once you burn enough people the word gets out and no one will bother with you anymore......

Smile Thanks for pointing me to Fry's. Made just for me today!

Thanks, jimj, for the info on Fry's. I just went to their website and it is like a dream come true. I'm shopping for a laptop right now, so will spend some time checking out what they've got. Thank you, thank you!

I never tried the meats from Costco because I had such a poor track record with meat from Sam's. That's good to know that they do use some discretion as to what they'll put on their shelves.

I have never heard anyone give a GOOD rating to Wal Mart as employer of the year. I am glad that your wife will be able to walk away from them. It's too bad because when Wal Mart started to grab the market from K-Mart years ago, they seemed to fill a niche in a qualified way. Now, all you hear is how poorly they treat their employees and how the quality of their service and merchandise is becoming. Too bad.

I've never heard anything good from Walmart in an employee sense, either. I work at Target and it's amazing, though.
