Thanks everyone for all the comments! They were all very helpful, especially the outdoor comments. Thinking about the smokeys, and all the lakes, made me really excited. I hope I can find a good group to explore them all with

Well.. I'm going to make my decision soon... I'll let you guys know!

UT, TVA, and Oak Ridge have long drawn a variety of Asians to East TN. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the Asian presence in Knoxville. Korean, Chinese, and Indians seem to be the most numerous, many of whom are second and third generation. I even know Knoxville-born Asians with southern accents. There have been more recent influxes of Laotians, Malaysians, and Indonesians. Filipinos seem more concentrated in north and east Knoxville.

It'll definitely be a shock! Just pretend you're at Mammoth and wear ski clothes all the time.

Default One more...

Elaine,
I will be job hunting in Knoxville, expecting to return to the East sometime in the first half of 2009. I was a K-8 teacher in East San Jose near Tully and King for 3 years. The mix of people were/are wonderful but the cost of living here is not friendly. Also, Cal can't manage it's finances even when Ahhnold twists everyone's arms in the legislature. Pathetic.

Anyway, post or write how your move is going. You really should accept the offer. I've lived all over this country and though Oregon and New Mexico are really beautiful and appealing, I think you will be making a mistake by not going to an equally beautiful and friendly state.
Besides, if it turns out to be not to your liking, Oregon and New Mexico, and Washington are not going anywhere!
