olecapt doesn't seem to know what he's talking about with the schools in Las Vegas. They are horrible, everyone knows that. And Hyde Park the best middle school? Maybe on paper, but have you ever been there? I worked there for a couple of years, it's not a good school. If that's the best they have to offer then we are in trouble. Redwingsfan is right, the school district is one of the worst in the country. They are horrible.

If you want a reason for the quality. Las Vegas is growing so fast it is hard to get teachers, and tough to build fast enough. Whether a particular school is good or bad, is irrelavant. It is your child's teacher that is the key. If you get a good teacher, doesn't really matter about the school or the district. If you get a bad teacher, ditto.

Few districts in Nevada support their teachers as they should be supported. Everyone is so concerned about meeting NCLB that the CRT test results rule the districts,, not quality education.

Did you ever try to get a verbal college transcript? Of course the best schools are on paper! How else on earth? You mean you want to feel good? Be impressed by the plant as you walk through the front door? Have a core of sycophant teachers that build your self esteme?

And I agree that the drive is to NCLB. So what? You think it is different elsewhere?

I find it hard to believe you people are so driven to believe the district is bad that you refuse any evidence to the contrary. You know what you know...don't try to confuse you with facts...

I also agree that a great teacher is a wonderous thing...however in picking a school the only way to find them is to be in a school for a while. That data is simply not published.

I have dealt with fine and not so fine public schools in upstate NY, Long Island NY, and Orange County California. I have reasonable standards.

"And I agree that the drive is to NCLB. So what? You think it is different elsewhere? " No, of course not, why would you think I would think so? NCLB has done more to destroy education and drive good teachers out of teaching than anything else in the past 50 years.

I was not approving NCLB. I was simply point out that NCLB is foisted on the entire nation not only on Las Vegas. It is not a differentiator.

In a discussion of Nevada the discussion would be on Nevada, not the US. Anticipating this is a positive

And you compare Las Vegas to? A discussion of Las Vegas schools involves some standard. You cannot judge them absent such.

Default Huh

That statement did not seem to reflect any prior discussion.

Besides,, "Las Vegas-Paradise area lands at top of list of dangerous metropolitan areas

While St. Louis was recently designated by a Kansas research company as the most dangerous city in the nation according to 2005 crime data, Las Vegas-Paradise area was designated the fourth most dangerous overall out of 344 metropolitan areas. ."

That is the well known MQ "sell more lists to the rubes". It correlates to nothing real. It exists to make money for MQ. It does not correlate to crime rate or violent crime rate. What it really says is Las Vegas has a problem with stolen cars...which is true and driven heavily by the tourist industry.

Default My advice.....don't move

Please note that the following information is what I have personally experienced and my humble opinion.I am currently a teacher in the Clark County School District, in a "good" school, and have experienced nothing but heartache in this district. I have stuck it out for three years, so as not to make anything look bad on my resume. The district wonders why they can't get/keep teachers......the wholesome, smart ones move on because they are not going to deal with the morons and minipulators that are called their supervisors. We are professionals, we do not need to be micro managed. The district hasn't caught on that if they took care of the teachers, they could get more quality individuals into the district merely by word of mouth from their happy teachers. I would highly suggest you don't move to Las Vegas, if you have kids and are concerned about the schools. I would NEVER allow my child to go to a school in Clark County School District. Sadly, we will be moving at the end of this school year.
