HI to all of my fellow Tuscany neighbors in Henderson. As I have been writing several times, my wife and I moved from Chicago to Tuscany four months ago. Love it. This community is super super clean. Everyone talked about a possible Scorpion problem in the Vegas area. WE have not scene one scorpion and had only one large roach in our bathtub. That is all we have had. Now the problem.... going to workout at the Rec Center and this man and wife were looking down toward the area where the garbage is picked up. The man says "ohhh a few rats! " I said what???? it looks so clean here. Then.. I spoke with the Tuscan patrol ( its a guard gated community) and he told me he has scene a few rats on the ground near the guard house. I haven't seen many complaints about rodents posted. I did read that palm trees can attract them. We have several Palm trees outside of our house over this big wall. I haven't scene anything. Oh..... HOA guy at the rec center said they have traps set out . Help!!!! Hope its not a problem around here. Thanks for any information anyone can provide

Rats, like roaches, are fairly commonplace here in the Valley, not community specific. We have 1 rat that runs along our backyard wall. We see him once every few weeks. We have no food source outside, so he never stops. We named him Bob.

Other than that, no scorpions, no spiders, 3 roaches in 2 1/2 years, and a couple geckos outside. We have also named them Bob.

Rats appear in one version or the other periodically. Watch for white boxes about a foot square and 2 inches high near schools, public building and hospitals. Those are poison boxes for rats and rodents. We put a couple out every six or eight months and see if the bait gets eaten. If so we put out half a dozen until the bait is left alone.

There is also the local rodent known as the desert ground squirrel which are striped like a chipmunk. They are all over the place in open areas. Just leave them alone as they do no harm. Often see them scurrying up the concrete block walls.

Scorpions are actually quite rare and highly localized. Generally a half dozen houses or less. I know of three or four places in Sun City Summerlin but the vast majority of the homes never see one.

"Rare" scorpions in half a dozen houses?

In the entire valley? That takes a break from reality of Charlie Sheen proportions. In all of Summerlin? That's also preposterous. In a few square miles of Mountain's Edge? Also ridiculous.

The only way that statement is accurate is "in a one block radius" or similar.

Scorpions are common in the valley. And that's a problem which is growing and spreading. An aversion to facts doesn't change the facts.

Your message again suggests you have reading comprehension problems.

The infestations are local. Half a dozen houses or so. I know of 4 or 5 in Sun City Summerlin but it is a few percent of the 7700 homes. They do not appear to spread. I don't think bark scorpions do well in our climate. Our house is surrounded by patches of open desert but we have never seen one anywhere nearby.

Come across a scorpion in perhaps 2 or 3% of the homes we see. Almost always dead in a sink or bathtub.

For the record, I've not seen a single scorpion, dead or alive, in or around my house (Madeira Canyon). I have a bug guy though that sprays every 2 months. Other critters are few and far between as well.

Ask your bug guy. Maybe BugBully will see fit to drop by.

They're in pockets scattered all over town. And woe to anyone who lives in one of those pockets. And those pockets are increasing in both size and quantity.

Actually easily contained with a little work. They don't spread easily as they reproduce slowly... You whack the colony back and you are set for months. Then whack again.

Best defense is a UV flashlight and a club combined with a calking gun. Seal it up tight.

I have seen one house with an actual infestation where it is likely they would have to tent the place to get rid of them. That was in the middle of Summerlin and killed the sale.
