Well actually I do!

Just having a discussion with someone who wants to plant a fig tree. Will they grow well in Vegas temperatures and soil? Is there a particular variety that one should look out for?

The only problem with fig trees is that they can take over if not aggressively pruned back occasionally. My mother-in-law's fig is the size of two full-grown elephants.

Consider blocking the roots from growing along the surface by burying big ceramic tiles around it. A four-sided box made out of 24"x24" tiles will do it. That will force the roots to grow down before they grow out. Someone planted a Mission Fig (since removed) at my house w/o doing this and the roots (and the tree) went nuts. Total pain to remove, pulling the roots off the surface was like ripping veins out of someone's legs.

Color me skeptical that ceramic tiles are going to stop fig roots. You can almost hear them growing in the summer.

It worked for the four I planted at our house in the Bay Area.

The Admiral and I spent an hour re-potting and rearranging the fig we have living in the corner of our living room this afternoon...must be synchronized to CD topics. It had become top heavy and was looking a little sickly.

It was planted there about five years ago to add a little green. And it has done well. Interesting it was not root bound. It was in a pot I would estimate. around 3 or 4 gallons and had a tight root ball but was still not filling the container. May be that it was actually stunted by marginal water. We clipped it back a bit and supported some of the limbs. We shall see.

Friends in So. CA had one actually planted in a hole left in their slab for the purpose. At the time we were last there it had been growing for 25 years and was around 30 feet in length growing around the living room. Like a live crown molding.

Had one in my back yard at our previous house and it did very well. Only getting to the figs (or any fruit) before the birds do is pretty hard to do here unless you put a tent over the tree.
