Hi we want to replace our fence on sides of house (currently chain link). What are pros and cons to 6 foot fences that have total privacy (solid) or or peekaboo openings in top section? For example if it's solid it's less likley you'll notice a burglarly going on etc. We can't decide...thanks.

Technically you are allowed six foot fences on the sides of backyards in most towns. The side of houses you usually cant put a six foot fence

and self closing gates.

depends on town I am automatically allowed a six foot fence completely around yard. from back of house to back fence.

Now sides of house from front of house to back of house is an easy variance to do six feet.

Privacy fences block good air circulation and make a patio/yard warmer. I just put in a new fence for that very reason.

as long as you get rid of the chainlink - who cares! Your property value and curb appeal already jumped 10%.

Even with a 6ft pvc fence, it's not total privacy as your neighbors can still see from 2nd floor windows. The best option, along with those fences, are the privacy shrubs discussed in other threads. I hate that when we're on the deck (which is even with the first floor level) we can easily see the neighbors and vice versa.

I'd go with privacy fence, that's what we have. No one needs to your business.

I never liked chain links, either. Until I saw the subtle black vinyl coated chain link fences that seem to be getting popular. When properly landscaped (flower beds, mulching, privacy trees like arborvitaes), they look kind of rich, with a very similar look as wrought iron fences.
