Tax hike is still in play. The freeze is just on assessment value, or what percentage of the overall tax burden is yours.

Of course, the county could admit that they are terrible at tax assessment and leave it back on the townships and villages, like every other county in the state.

That’s what needs to be done. I called the town of Huntington in 2017 to ask them what my expected taxes would be in a house we where considering building. They gave me a estimated rate. Fast toward delays, permit issues, national grid moratorium and covid. They just set me at full tax rate. Guess what 3 tax years later the full tax rate is $400 more than the the estimate I was given in 2017. Nassau would say new construction throw a dart and be like 36k.

So why don't you get up in the face of the county legiscritters and let them know in no uncertain terms if they raise taxes, or better don't cut taxes, you'll kick them out on their a55e5? If enough people did this, taxes wouldn't go up, and might even go down. But you'll then have to live with public employee headcount cuts, which should be done anyway.

Not freezing taxes, just the assessments. Only means that whatever they determined as your share of the tax burden remains the same. If they raise taxes, you'll pay the same percentage of the new total.

Correct.

But in a year or two when the rates “catch up” to the true value, home owners will be hit with a sizable increase at once.
