Different group of people might have risks for different diseases or medical problems. All doctors are trained to take care of the whole spectrum, some might have limitations due to not having dealt with a particular problem much (so they would refer to someone they know who will take care of), this would be an unusual condition and could happen to any individual.

Normally it is very rare to be subject to improper treatment due to lifestyle or practices unless it is dangerous to self or others and this again is very rare (think someone who is planning to kill a specific person, etc.). They are providers that have done inappropriate things, but again this is the exception, so the OP should be fine with any doc for the most part.

What a dumb reply! The OP doesn't need a gay doctor. The sexual preference of any doctor is irrelevant and I don't know of any doctor who advertises his/her sexual preference. A heterosexual doctor can treat STD's just as well as a gay doctor. The OP's question is dumb from the point of view that only a gay doctor will understand his problem and can treat him. Don't male doctors treat women with female problems? Can't a female doctor treat a male patient with prostate problems?

Many women choose to see a female doctor, especially gynecologists. Because they are more comfortable discussing issues related to womens health with a woman. Many men prefer a male doctor. It's not unreasonable that a gay man would prefer a gay male doctor. The most important thing about a patient/doctor relationship is how comfortable the patient feels about discussing their health issues with their doctor. The OP has a very valid question and it does not deserve to be made light of.

Well said! That's exactly right.

To the OP, I will send you a private message listing 3 gay friendly doctors in the Kaiser network.

For starters, the OP never said anything about being treated for STD's or HIV. Those problems aren't limited to gay people - straights can get STD's or HIV too. Should they visit a gay or straight doctor or does it make any difference?

You're right about females being more comfortable with female doctors. But to take it further, you would probably think only a Black doctor could understand problems with Black patients and treat them accordingly. Maybe people should just find the best doctor and go with that.

Since gays are STILL often persecuted for their sexual orientation, I don't think it's unreasonable to want a gay or gay-friendly doctor.

People pick doctor's for all kinds of reasons. Heck, my baby's pediatrian is trans-gender, and I know a lot of gays & trans-gender families go to her because they feel more comfortable with her. Makes sense to me!

As Jean Jeunet and FunkyOne have already stated, a gay person (such as myself) may feel more comfortable seeing a gay doctor or a self proclaimed gay-friendly doctor. The OP also said "gay-friendly" doctor; that could also mean a straight doctor who is "gay-friendly."

Take this with a big ol' "for what it's worth; YMMV," since I don't happen to be gay...

I've heard horror stories about other doctors trying to impose their preferred courses of treatment on people with some of the medical issues I've found myself facing. I've never had that problem at Kaiser. Every doctor I've seen has laid out my options and offered their opinions, but they've never judged me or my decisions. They've also avoided making assumptions about my life, and when they've asked me about partners, it's been in gender-neutral terms unless there's a pressing reason it would matter.

There are probably some bad apples out there, but I can honestly say that in my many years as a Kaiser patient, I've never run into any.
