Not kidding, there are number of homes in Taft, CA starting as low as $30,000, which is ranked top-3 lowest real-estate prices in west coast. Would you move here from LA to escape high-cost of living, along with continuing LA housing shortage?

The closer you are to the ocean, the more the house is worth. Taft, CA (as well as Maricopa, CA) is seriously underpriced. Something great will come soon.

Homes in the Taft area now are about $100,000 or more and at $100,000 they are likely to need work.

Taft and Maricopa are about 60 miles from the beach and about a 2 hour drive each way. The weather in the Southern San Joaquin Valley is extreme; the value of areas closer to the coast where the climate is more reasonable would be much greater.

I'd prefer California City.

The discussion Where’s the cheapest place to live in California? was created more than three years after this discussion and has more, including California City. This discussion however specifies Taft, just Taft.

I get wanting to own a home, but does anyone want to do a daily Taft to L.A. commute? Plan on spending a minimum of four-five hours a day in your car.

Not to mention having to travel I-5 over the Grapevine, which shuts down during snow storms.

After 4 years, Taft, CA is no longer the cheapest. A lot has changed, with home prices now stabilizing. The winner is now Trona, CA.
