Who chooses the L.A. Marathon route? Or, is it the same every year?

It is mostly the same every year. By me, the route hasn't changed in at least a decade, and wouldn't be surprised if it's been the same for many years longer. I'm sure if there is road construction the may move the route a few blocks for a year.

"...in 2010, a new route, dubbed “Stadium to Sea,” was intended to draw locals—as well as participants from around the world—to show off the city’s best features on a sightseeing tour from Dodger Stadium, through downtown, Hollywood, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills, and on to the Veterans Administration grounds and the finish line in Santa Monica.

“The [early] trials and tribulations evolved into our goal of designing the iconic tour of Southern California. Our staff spent 13 months and designed more than 50 marathon courses in our attempts to achieve it—we had to secure approvals from four cities and the federal government to run through the V.A. property.”

Race routes are generally decided (or approved / disapproved) by the RD, the Race Director, subject to government approval of course.

The people that own and organize road races choose the course at their discretion. The LA Marathon is currently owned by former Dodger owner Frank McCourt. He moved the race start to Dodger stadium when he bought it.

Yeah- Having run the LA Marathon I'm pretty confident the course does not go through Memphis. No worries for you there.

I would be cool if it went through Bristol, and they did a few laps at Thunder Valley.

Lol, exact opposite corners of a very long state, Memphis and Bristol. Did you know that Bristol sits so much on the border of TN and VA that the state border runs down the middle of Main St.? I wonder if you could live in one state (TN) with zero income tax, and buy cars and shop in the state with the lower sales tax (TN plus City of Bristol at 9.3% vs 5% for VA) - kinda the best of both worlds?

I didn't know that. Hey, remember that race where Terry Labonte got looped on the last lap by Dale Earnhardt? That was a wild night.
