Ruth,
I just spent a week in Alaska.
I spent almost the whole time there in board shorts, tee shirts and sandals.
Same weather as northern Washington which was surprisingly hot as well.

The abalone is disappearing due to no kelp.
The urchins are devastating the kelp because there are no more starfish to keep them in check.
This isn't quite what happened. California starfish started dying in 2013 due to a known starfish virus. Most of the population was wiped out.

We also noticed that they were gone from our local tidepools here in OC.

The initial worry was that the starfish would never be able to recover and starfish prey would proliferate and alter the ecosystem. Starfish feed on a variety of invertebrates, including mussels, sea urchins, clams and snails. Without starfish, these species could wipe out algae, plants and other sea life that thrive when hungry snails and urchins are controlled.

But, as the article states, the species is recovering. This summer I saw several very large ochre starfish at Laguna Beach for the first time in years.

I also found a couple of abalone shells there for the first time in many, many years. Don't despair.

Yesterday, LAX broke its previous record of 93 degrees from 1984. It was 97.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s in most of Southern California on Friday and in the 100s all the way from Long Beach to downtown Los Angeles and around Beverly Hills, according to National Weather Service forecaster Carol Smith.

The hot wind made me feel like I was in a convection oven.

It seems hotter than it usually is for mid-July. Get ready for more...

The peak of the heat is expected to hit the region Friday into the weekend, with widespread highs around 100 to 108 degrees across the warmest valleys, including Woodland Hills, the Santa Clarita Valley and parts of the San Gabriel Valley.

The hottest areas will be desert regions such as the Antelope Valley, which could see temperatures between 105 to 112 degrees.

Downtown Los Angeles could inch toward 90 degrees.

It's pretty warm down here as well.

Dangerously hot temperatures are broiling California this weekend as a “heat dome” continues to bake the American West, increasing the risk of heat-related health issues and wildfires.

On Saturday (7/15/23) most of the state will be under an excessive heat warning or heat advisory, which will continue in many regions through next week. In Southern California, temperatures Saturday are expected to reach 106 and 108 degrees in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, respectively, while the Antelope Valley could see a high of 115.
