As I was bringing my groceries from the department store to the car, I nearly got hit by a car. The man continued without even stopping, cursing and calling me names based on my race. I can tell the guy works in a department shop based on his uniform. I managed to obtain the car license plate number, but I didn't get a decent look at the guy. When I spoke to the manager and gave the License plate number, she informed me that she didn't know who of the 94 employees owned which car; however, she stated she would look into it for sure if I could provide her the name. Is it possible for me to go to the DMV, present the license plate number, and obtain the name? Is it feasible to obtain the name of the driver based on the license plate number in any other way?

I live in Los Angeles, CA.

No.
That would be obviously problematic if so.

Not on your own, but you can file a police report if it rises to that level of what you believe is a crime. It's also unethical that a store manager would entertain the idea of doing the same thing simply by you providing a license plate or finding out the employee's name. What if you're a psycho who uses that information to track them down and murder them?

I didn't inquire the driver's address; I just wanted to know his name.

I realize that you can talk about whatever you want while hiding behind a computer. In person, I have no doubt you will speak with some maturity.

You got your answer. File a police report. You can't just inquire about a random vehicle via the DMV and get information like the name of the registered owner. And people like Rebecca Schaeffer would know why. This "manager" is an idiot if they're even for a second thinking they should help you since they have no idea your intentions. There's a reason we have strict anti-stalking laws.

DMV changed the rules back when that actress got killed because a stalker had gotten her address from DMV. You can only get name/address now with a subpoena. Since there is no damage to your car, best advice would be to let it go.

I appreciate your response.

I went to the police station and reported this. They collected all the information from me and provided me with a file reference number solely for the record. They essentially said the same thing as you did. As I didn’t get physically hurt, they cannot do anything about it, it seems.
