Photos from the past 12-24 hours, posted online, show rows of makeshift trusses abreast of the existing pylons, supporting the highway itself... steel I-beams transversely under the highway, vertical wooden supports, cross-braced to not buckle... and steel I-beams again transversely, at grade-level. Presumably the structural engineers ran calculations to show that such as system is temporarily workable at some acceptable safety-factor.

The actual "permanent" repair may still take months, if individual vertical pylons have to be removed and replaced. This can presumably be done without shutting down the highway, working on one pylon after another, individually. Such campaign might take months!

Let's hope so.

The piles of wooden pallets stored with combustible liquids under Interstate 10 had been troubling Caltrans and state fire officials for at least three years before the materials went up in flames this month and caused the closure of one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways for more than a week, documents newly released from Caltrans show.

The fire is now being investigated as arson. It also put a spotlight on the little-known $34.6-million Caltrans lease program that allows private companies to rent out space underneath and next to freeways. Standing atop the Santa Monica Freeway early Sunday morning, Gov. Gavin Newsom said he expects to have on Wednesday an early statewide assessment of the program, which has more than 600 leases.

Will there be detour signs all over there? The traffic there is horrendous at rush hour.

I was planning to go to the Wesetfield Century City mall from the IE on a weekday soon. I should probably just wait a few weeks till the freeway's all redone to even attempt going in that madness, right?
