Why do so many Louisiana parents send their kids to Catholic schools? (Baton Rouge: private school tuition, property taxes)

You completely missed the history of catholic schools in Louisiana. Much of which came about because there was no school system at all in early Louisiana colonial periods and the local diocese took it upon themselves to help the people.



FYI, I was taught all of these facts in a Louisiana public middle school system. No, I am not the entitled bigot that you wish me to be.

It's not a money issue: you could pour millions and billions and trillions down the drain funding those schools, but until you change the culture of ignorance, violence, and the pursuit of failure, nothing will change.

Besides, public schools are becoming a joke regardless of who attends them. There's too much federal regulation of what should be a local matter, too much dumbing-down (in large part in order to accomodate the failures at the expense of successful students) of the curriculum, and almost no accountability on the part of teachers, the administrations and their unions.

The Louisiana public school system shares many of the same issues other states have. We just happen to have a private educational system and I cannot fathom why the original OP is taking an issue with this.

Well duh. A school is just a building. The money is needed in the neighborhoods. There's hardly a good school in the country and the world were the neighborhood surrounding it is full of murder and police. I went to a "good" school and the only good thing about it was the rich kids.

Yeah, this is puzzling. We pay for police, fire fighters, libraries, etc. If rgathrights is suggesting that we eliminate taxes, and I think that would change quite a bit, and overwhelmingly for the worse.

Absolutely true, no matter where in the country you live. For many, it has nothing to do with getting a "religious education." It's escaping the big bad public schools (and "those" kids in them).

Knew a lot of kids from New Orleans...not a single one went to a public school. All were Catholic school.

Most of the people I know around Baton Rouge who send their kids to Catholic (and Christian schools too) are those whose kids would otherwise be districted into EBR Parish public schools which is crime ridden and is dysfunctional. The reason Central schools was created was because parents didn't feel safe with their kids in EBR schools with drugs and crime. The recent threatened teachers political walkout over the Exxon tax breaks only highlights the kind of school system it is and the kind of left wing environment the teachers want to create.

Most of my friends and acquaintances I know in Central or Livingston Parish or Ascension Parish sends their kids to public schools. Livingston Parish is known for our excellent public schools. And no I don't think all schools should be funded equally, I think if someone lives in an area where they pay higher property taxes and/or sales taxes than their kids are entitled to a better funded school than those who contribute less.

I do know a handful of people throughout the state who home school their kids or send them to private Catholic or Christian schools to avoid the left wing brainwashing that public schools across the nation are known for these days.

Compared to other states I've lived.....Catholic schools are also big in Baltimore among the few middle class white families who still live within city limits or in the more downscale suburbs. This is because Baltimore schools are a war zone (with a high school graduation rate of around 60%), just like the rest of that godforsaken city. In West Virginia most people who send their kids to private school do do it for the religious nature and want to give them a wholesome Christian education.

The why varies from person to person. Locally schools are redistricted not only based upon geography and overall student population, they also factor racial balance based upon skin color. This causes some students to be bused across the parish to maintain a racial balance. Only two ways to avoid this,...move or enroll in private school. Another factor is student safety. Some school students suffer vicious attacks from fellow students and receive no help from school faculty. Parents who can afford to will pull their student out of school for private school. Yes, racism does play a part but not in the way you think. The racist are the blacks who regularly attack white students at some schools. Other factors could include family history with the school and wanting their child taught where Christianity is allowed instead of attacked and banned.
