As an active person I do a lot of outside activities. Walking, cycling, gardening, photography, skating.
What's the gator situation like in each part of Louisiana? Is kayaking really safe there? I'm not looking to live in the city.

Not a problem unless you're near bayous. It'd be easier if you said which areas you're looking into.

Each part has gators then.

I wouldn't swim with 'em, but they won't bother you in a kayak.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Saw a piece on the evening news of an alligator charging a kayak in North Carolina and knocking the guy into the water. Luckily, he survived. Living in Florida I always assume, if there's any body of water, expect there might also be alligators.

I lived down in Louisiana in the early 90's and they definitely have alligators. Coming from living up North, it was quite a shock to see them!

The most I saw was in Atchafalaya Swamp. I had gone to get some photos of spoonbills and the various raptors that frequent the swamp and didn't really realize that there would be alligators. I was taking photos from a small boat when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a large gator surface. I am not a jumpy person but I was so rattled I almost dropped the camera and came close to tipping the boat. The next few gators I saw were not quite as traumatizing, lol. If you WANT to see alligators, this is a great place to go.

I also have seen them in the lake below while going over the bridge over Lake Pontchartrain though only a couple of times.

They seem to prefer swamps and bayous vs. larger water bodies but don't be fooled because I have seen them in lakes. Lake Charles is another place where they are supposedly common. I have been through there but never went looking for alligators so can't vouch for that.

Austin is interesting because that is the end of their range. Every once in a while they find a gator around Austin but they never know if it migrated or was a pet that got dumped.
