I was passing through Louisiana on my way between Austin TX and Atlanta GA. It was between 15*F and 20*F and for the first time passing through that state, I witnessed frozen swamps. Never in my life have I seen frozen swamps. I've seen frozen lakes, frozen ponds, frozen streams... but I never thought I would witness frozen swamps in Louisiana. It made me wonder how often does a thing like that happen in Louisiana...

Very rarely do we get weather on that level in Louisiana. It does happen, however.

We had quite a bit of snow in February 2021 and the temperature was in the single digits for a couple of nights. One night was 1 above zero. This was in Shreveport. The closer you get to Arkansas, the more likely you see winter weather like this.

Down in southern Louisiana, many places had freezing rain and sleet this past week. This pretty much covered the whole state with some single digits once again in certain areas near Arkansas.

So, while it rarely happens, we are not immune to severe winter weather. Did you come across any icy roads, especially elevated highways and bridges?

I stayed on the Interstate, I-10 across the Mississippi to Baton Rouge was closed due to an accident. Not sure if it was because of ice but I had to diverge and cross further up north. On my way back I used I-20, fortunately there was no ice on the highways. Still crazy to see that in Louisiana though.

I lived in southwest Louisiana for over 5 years. It was in the high teens/low twenties maybe 2-3 nights. So, it rarely happens. It snowed maybe 2-3 times as well.

But how often do these extreme winter fronts come through? Not very often. Also look at the entire country was cold over that week or so.

It seldom happens, but even if the temps don't get that low, if you're by the river in New Orleans it will feel like Siberia when it blows over the water your way. Cold, wind, rain and 100% humidity are a really bad combination. Some of my coldest moments in New Orleans occurred at Mardi Gras parades.

We had 8 inches of snow on the Northshore about 10 years ago, but this was extremely rare.
