I'm about to move to Louisville. My job will be downtown and I'm thinking about the Old Louisville area. I've heard it's got some great magnet schools and the area isn't going to be terrible for kids. My job is pretty hectic and I really need to be close to town.
Any suggestions on other areas that would be close but better when there are kids involved????

Dupont Manuel High is within walking distance to UofL - and anywhere east of that area would be suitable for you rneeds. Look around Eastern Parkway, over toward the Audubon area, and all of the little neighborhoods in between.

Aububon Park is an actual Bird Sanctuary inside of a 'city', beautiful houses - but some have been turned into apartments. Same for Eastern parkway area. Focus from UofL to Poplar level Road to Goss avenue - up to the watterson expressway area.

I think you will find what you are looking for. Old Louisville is a very neat place to be - but if my kids were still in school - I would head east.

pm me if you need more info.

why does every one recommend to head east? Old Louisville is a wonderful and beautiful area, one of the finest historic neighborhoods in the south. The neighborhood is very safe despite what rumors you may hear. There will be some crime which mostly entails car break ins. I suggest that you rent a place in Old Louisville on Belgravia Court. Some people will allow you month leases even in this area. Get a feel for the area. Contact the neighborhood association and talk to them, they are very active and friendly. Manual is the best public high school by far with in a 2 hour drive of downtown Louisville. Unless your kids are say under 7, this would be an awesome and diverse place to raise children. When I have children they will stay in the area, and you can view www.oldlouisville.com to get some numbers to call for the neighborhood association. Me? I live right here in downtown Louisville. I see an increasing number of people moving to Old Louisville with children, especially middle and high school age. They will be surrounded by great culture and diversity. Manual also has a diverse student population, which is rare to nonexistent anywhere else in KY. If you want to hear more or a different perspective, please feel free to PM me.
