my mom used to refer to kids that were full of "**** and vinega" as (and I don't know how to spell this!) "Christlahs".....

one of my best friends from Jonesport (Jonespaht) used to say "oh my aching arse"....and she said arse just like it's spelled!

Last edited by mollysmiles; 11-25-2007 at 08:11 PM.. Reason: so, it deleted the part that goes with vinegar.....starts will a P....ends in an iss

Mollysmiles remarks:
"and I don't know how to spell this!) "Christlahs"....."

It's "Christless" or woithout Christ. It refers to somebody or something without kindness or compassion. Unworthy or useless.

This is also said as Jeezless with the same meaning. Think about it.

My parents say a lot of these sayings...they were born and raised on Cape Cod. Musta trickled down the coast.

My realtor is a born and raised Mainer, I love her accent. She says "furnichoor" (furniture)...and "Chiner" and "Auguster".
But accents are a whole 'nother thread!

Some years ago I was buying a house in NH and at the signing the banker kept refering to the seller and myself as "the Patties". I was a little offended and put off by a term that seemed to imply or to state that I was a Patsy. After the signing I mentioned that to the realtor and he laughed and said I had misunderstood the NH accent. He was refering to us as "the parties", not as patties.
