I lived in Oxon Hill from 1950 - 1990 (40 years) and am still very familiar with that area.

The exact location you described (Rivertowne shopping center area) is not "right on a metro line" if you mean actual metrorail. There are metrobusses, but you would have to drive at least 3 miles to park at a metrorail station, which is on the Green line. And metrorail is on limited schedule due to COVID-19. The population has been overwhelmingly African-American for decades, although with increasing numbers of Hispanics, and a few Filipinos.

Hyattsville, which was just mentioned, is a more walkable area with character, part of it is an incorporated municipality, and close to the Universities community. Oxon Hill has no culture or real social life, although it's convenient to all the social and cultural life of Alexandria.

What's the exact location of your worksite, may I ask?

If that $1400 is one weeks net income (after taxes & saving/investing commitment)... you're golden.
I suspect though that the underlying issue is that neither PG or Baltimore is really affordable.
Not on the income you have.

Find a nicer place in a nicer location that you can SHARE with someone else.
Cut your housing costs in half. Then find a better paying job.

I would not move to Oxon Hill for the reasons already posted. Hyattsville is by far a better option, it's much MUCH nicer than it was when I was living in the area in the late 70's when it was kind of dumpy. There are good ethnic restaurants and I believe a Harris Teeter. Right up the road are the options in College Park along with a Metro station.

guys. i have been a long long time reader of this forum and i finally decided to sign up today. I NEED ADVICE.

What's your opinion on this?

choosing oxon hill because the place i'm looking at is a apt with ALL UTILITIES and right on the metro line. Also it's close to VA and DC.
I'm a whole foods harris tetter type of person.
Anything is better than Baltimore, Oxon hill doesn’t have a shooting every day, nor squeegee men on every corner, if you can manage Baltimore, then you can probably manage Oxon Hill,

no shootings everyday but about 3 murders last year. Oxon hill is just real busy with alot of police activity. SE DC is right down the street but so is the outlets national harbor and top golf and Virginia which is a different world. OP might be good.

Pretty sure when you compare a "metropolis" to a suburban city there will always be a difference.
