Hello,
We are originally from southern NJ (Gloucester county) where the towns are small and everyone knows everyone. We currently reside in Midlothian, Virginia (right outside Richmond) and love it , but are moving to Maryland for my husband’s career.
While we love the availability of everything to do in the Richmond area, we do miss the small town feel. We have three young children, all of whom are not yet in school but will be soon. We’d like to move to an area with good schools. We must be within 2 hours of Rockville. We would love a small safe town feel (if possible) while also having the amenities of grocery and shopping nearby. We don’t want to live in the middle of no where with no neighbors in sight, but we also hate being too close to the big cities and the traffic. I am a SAHM and would love the ability to take the kids to parks or hiking or other amenities during the day (post Covid of course).
We have heard good things of Havre De Grace, Bel Air and Caroll County In general.
Can anyone concur/disagree with the suggested towns or recommend specific towns (that I can look up on realtor.com) that might fit our needs? Would especially love input from anyone who understands the southern NJ vibe!
Thanks =]

Havre de Grace would be stretching the two hours from Rockville thing during rush hour. Heck, even Bel Air might be too far. Sykesville (Carroll County) might be a good bet. Howard County has the good schools you want, but it doesn't have as much of a small-town vibe as some other places do. It's more suburban in its feel. But aside from that, I think it could work for you.

In general they're all fine.
How often will someone need to drive down to Rockville?

Maybe once a week? It would not be daily.

I'd hope not. How about going the other way?

Assuming you still have family/friends in NJ... being closer to them matters too. LINK
On this basis I'd say stick with the BelAir end of the choices you can afford.

If you go with Havre de Grace or Bel Air, check the school boundaries carefully. The schools serving Edgewood are poorly rated. Edgewood High School is ranked 3/10 on Great Schools. Though, Havre de Grace High School is ranked only 5/10.

Why not Delaware? Some nice place's and the Tax situation would be much better then either MD or NJ.

I would love to be in Delaware but it isn’t a possibility with the job My husband has accepted because of the territory coverage.
