Did anyone else notice that Biden won a few counties in rural MD that haven't voted Democratic since the 1960s? He took two counties on the Eastern Shore -- Talbot and Kent -- and came very close in Wicomico. He also won Frederick by 10%. Frederick is easily explainable given all the telecommuters to Baltimore and DC, but what's going on on the Shore? Maybe rural MD was never particularly conservative to begin with.

Likely so (link) ...plus those intelligent enough to not reward stupidity and avarice.

Rural MD is moderately conservative overall. The Eastern shore can probably be explained by its proximity to Delaware. Biden was 'local'. As far as Frederick look at the vote in the Gay Marriage referendum. Frederick was one of the highest percentage of yes votes in the state. We used to elect centrist Democrat as our congress critter until the Dems threw her out in a primary for an extreme leftist. Then we got stuck with Bartlett for years.

I was surprised to see Calvert County at almost 50/50, but I noticed, as is the case for Talbot and Kent, that the # of votes for Trump remained nearly the same while the Democrat votes increased. (Calvert by 4,000, Talbot by 2,500.)

So it suggests to me a matter of turnout.

Trump really only plays in Allegany and Garrett County in Maryland. The other rural parts of the state aren't as economically depressed, less white demographically, and have much less of the "what else have we got to lose" attitude that Trump embodies.

"Conservatism" as an ideology isn't really the defining factor here, except when discussing Frederick County. It is purple, maybe blue, at this point because of Montgomery County transplants in the last 10-20 years.

I would guess it was simply a dislike of Trump. Hardly the first locales to vote for someone, but decide not to reelect him.

I disagree. There is a strong Trump faction in Frederick and Washington counties as you move away from Frederick and parts of Hagerstown. The Trump machine is still selling Trump banners and signs and I know of some that have replaced their fading signs since the election.

No doubt you guys downstate have pockets where "Trumpism" is a strong political faction, but not at a county level. Meanwhile Trump got 68% of the vote in Allegany County as a whole and over 70% in Garrett.

Trumpism is the dominate political sentiment in Western Maryland right now, something that can't be said for any other region of the state, as OP points out.

I'll agree that the further west you get the stronger it gets (or maybe its the higher the elevation the stronger it gets :-)) I didn't see the split for the county here but do know that it isn't wise to be vocally anti Trump west of Frederick City especially if you have a business
