The Official Casino Discussion Thread!

PROPOSED CITIES AND TOWNS THAT CASINOS COULD BE IN:

TAUNTON- Taunton Mayor Thomas Hoye Jr. and the chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe have promised that "thousands of jobs" and an economic rebirth of the city will flow from the construction of a destination resort casino in Taunton at the intersections of Routes 24 and 140, which is also the exit near the Silver City Galleria Mall.

SUFFOLK DOWNS (EAST BOSTON)- Developers Suffolk Downs/ Richard Fields, Joe O'Donnell/ Caesars Entertainment are proposing a more than $1 billion casino at the site of the current East Boston race track.

The proposal would create a casino resort with a hotel, entertainment and retail facilities, and local restaurants along with thoroughbred racing.

FOXBOROUGH- Wynn Resorts is proposing a resort casino across the street from Gillete Stadium.

MILFORD- Along Interstate 495 in Milford, a $850 million casino, hotel, and retail complex has been proposed by developer David Nunes. The Crossroads Resort would include a 176,000-square-foot gambling floor, a 350-room hotel, and 60,000 square feet of retail shops and restaurant space.

PALMER- Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority is proposing a $500 million to $600 million resport casino on undeveloped land off the Massachusetts Turnpike.

SPRINGFIELD- Developer Ameristar Casinos Inc. has proposed a $500 million-plus resort casino at the vacant industrial site that was the former Westinghouse plant in Springfield.

NEW BEDFORD- Developer KG Urban Enterprises proposed a $500 million resort casino on the former power plant site at MacArthur Drive and Canon Street in New Bedford.

Northeast Group has proposed a resort waterfront casino, hotel and marina in the Hicks Logan area of New Bedford.

OTHER NOTABLE CITIES:

FALL RIVER (Vineyard tribe seeks Fall River casino vote - Quincy, MA - The Patriot Ledger)

Hopefully we can see this list fill up as the casino discussion continues. Discuss here!

If the politicians truly want to help Mass cities they
will build these monstrosities inside the cities at the unused
properties. Public transportation is present. Walkability inside
the city is present. I'm especially talking about Springfield over Palmer.
Otherwise it's just a sellout.

I am generally not a fan of Casinos, especially in rural areas like in Ct.

But the Springfield proposal makes sense on so many levels. It would do wonders for downtown, which until not too long ago, was not that bad of a place.

The people in the town of Milford are vehemently fighting the Casino development. I think it is out of place in Milford and the nearby towns of Hopkinton and Franklin.

The East Boston site makes the most sense. I don't see another use for the old Suffolk downs property. The area could probably use another hotel to double for the airport travelers.

What about the MGM plans for Springfield and the Hard Rock plans for West Springfield. Both make more sense than a casino out in Palmer or one on the edge of Springfield.

Also I am pretty sure Ameristar has pulled out of it's plans. Penn National,MGM and Hard Rock are the ones fighting it out in Spfld with Mohegan still going strong with their Palmer bid.

Makes sense. Blurry eyed slot machine addicts and innocent antique collectors in Brimfield doesn't seem to mix. Haven't the townspeople of Palmer had enough pain with the Molly Bish ordeal. They don't need to draw more losers into their town.

I thought Palmer wanted a casino and there have been offices set up in Palmer for that purpose for a long time now. Unless I'm missing something, Palmer would be the ideal location.

They have their own Mass Pike exit, they aren't that far from rte 495 and 84 to suck in the gamblers from out of state and there certainly is room for it. They're closer to Boston than Springfield is. Palmer now has nothing. It used to have paper mills but there are no jobs now and the same is true for the surrounding small towns that used to depend upon Palmer. That entire area of the state needs to have something; it's like a wasteland of struggling towns with no jobs. Paper mills will never come back (who would want them anyway) so there is nothing to go back to.

That entire area is depressed. Springfield would be a distant second choice as far as I am concerned because of the traffic on route 91 which is already impossible. Rte 91 is poorly designed and where would it draw people from? The Hartford area? Vermont to the north? The sparsely populated Berkshires? I'm also not too sure that the pretty suburbs of Springfield like Longmeadow, East Longmeadow, Wilbraham, and Hamden, would be thrilled at the idea of a casino with the type of people it might bring in and the traffic. What Springfield needs is honest leadership who can make it more like the city it used to be with shopping, beautiful parks, and decent places for people to work. Springfield could be brought back and it is our third largest city, worth saving.

I think there should be a casino for the south coast but I am not familiar with that area. Another for Boston. If we have to have casinos, that's where I would place them. Thanks for this thread.

That has nothing to do with it. Brimfield, with its diminishing and infrequent antique markets, has little or nothing to do with Palmer. Go to Palmer and see what's there---Nothing. Lots of struggling people without jobs. It's like some of the old cities on the south coast where there are people leftover from another era who are in dire need of jobs. I don't think a casino is a fabulous addition to a community but when you have a place like Palmer there is no way but up.

Palmer is a suburb of Springfield and is not a wasteland. The people that live there do work, some commute to Springfield some to Worcester. Also Springfield would draw people from the same places as Palmer. Except Springfield is much more accessible via I91 I90 I291 I391 rt 57 just to name a few. Palmer has the pike and that's it.

Also Springfield has The Basketball Hall of Fame,Six Flags New England, The Quadrangle Musuems, many shopping areas, many more restaurants, easier access to the Berkshires and Vermont and points south. While Palmer has a McDonald's a DD and some gas stations and a CVS.
