My husband and I moved to Maui four months ago. We were fortunate enough to both find jobs right away, but that has left it kind of difficult to make friends. We live in Makawao and on the weekends we like to go fishing. We go to black sand beach in South Maui and we also spear fish on the North Shore. I would say we are pretty cool and easy to get a long with, we just haven't found people like us. We are in our mid 20's, we don't have any children, we also DO NOT do drugs of any kind. Anyways, if you want to be friends, let me know!

Many people here meet friends through work, church, their own neighborhood or join a volunteer organization. Maybe you can try those?

One of the best ways to make friends is to give your neighbors some of that fish you are catching! Sharing puts you 10 leaps ahead in the ohana-making, and not because people need the fish, but because it shows you consider yourself a part of that community.

And while I very much understand what you mean, I respectfully suggest you start with making friends with people who aren't necessarily like you. That is, share fish with your neighbors who are older, along with some brownies for those who are younger. I think you may find that age is not as much of a divider here on Maui as it might be in other areas, or at the very least you'll get introduced to other people in their ohana, and some are bound to be your age.

Go to the rodeos. There's one in Haiku this weekend. Take a slight right at 5 corners if you're coming from Makawao (so I was told, I've never been to that arena).

I am looking into moving to Makawao and opening a salon and tattoo studio. We own businesses on the mainland but want to sell and relocate. How do you like Makawao? I do have a son and am curious about schools close by.
