No, stuffing your car with "a few boxes" is not the way to go. Most companies would not accept a car like that. But you can always inquire. The safer bet is to have your boxes shipped separately.

I should have been more clear on my reply. The shipping companies said no additional stuff. One company even made it sound that car seats were iffy and they didn't want to be responsibly for damage. Some feedback I have gotten from those who have done it several times was that they left stuff in their car and it was fine. Basically the shipping companies can refuse it, and if that slips past them, well anything else won't be covered in case of damage or theft.

I have shipped two cars to Hawaii. Each time was with Matson and they said that nothing after-market can be left in the car. I shipped one from Seattle and one from Long Beach, and at each location an employee came out and inspected the car. I'm sure that if I had left anything in there they would have had me remove it. Maybe your friends shipped with someone else who didn't have the same regulations?????

Once you decide which company you are going to use to ship your vehicle, I suggest following their procedures. Not worth trying to do something that they may not allow. What happens if you leave some stuff in your vehicle and then get to the dock and they tell you to remove it?

I shipped my car 7/2013 via Horizon and they would not allow any additional items. They would allow a spare tire and jack, and a car seat (I do not have). I offered to even sign a waiver of liability to allow me to put boxes inside the car and they would not accept this.

I drove my car across the country and almost was unable to ship my car as I did not have my proof of registration with me. I am lucky they let the car ship anyway. I did have an empty gas can in my trunk they did allow me to keep inside of the car after a little hesitation. I left it in there expecting them to say no and have to throw it away.
