We have never been to Maui before and we are planning a 7 day vacation. We will renting a home close to a beach somewhere on the island. Our main concern is our 3 year old son. He loves the water and is already a great little paddler and can look after himself in swimming pools. One of us will be with him at all times but we want to know where the safest beaches are located. We would prefer no strong currents, no big waves but some gentle ones will be cool for him to experience. And white sands would be nice

Any help would be appreciated

Beaches on South Maui are probably the safest. Kama'ole 1,2 and 3 all have lifeguards. Keep in mind, that there really is no 'safe' beach. Not to be alarmist, but we do lose someone out there about once a month on average. Keep a close eye on your kid when he's out there, and I mean close, as being in the water with him. And remember that summer up here is winter south of the equator, when they have their biggest storms, and South Maui has the occasional south swell, in which case, stay in the pool. BTW, Kihei has a beautiful, and not overly used, public pool on Lipoa Street. Has a great keiki pool.

Never turn your back on the ocean

Unless, of course, you're at the public pool

And don't pet the black vana

Baby beach in Lahaina it Iva's a large reef which protects it from big waves. Very safe

Baby Beach on the Northshore at Paia is where you see many, many toddlers and babies.

Renting a house 'somewhere on the island' doesn't lend itself well to suggesting beaches, however if you find yourself on the west side of the island, Napili Bay is a nice spot. Regardless of where you go, be exceptionally careful.. Always swim with other people present, and as already stated, never ever turn your back on the ocean.
