It doesn't take years for homeowners exemption- effective upon residency and that can be the day you land.
We can debate sales tax, but you’re wrong about income tax. California is 6% on 58k to 81k, and 8% 81k to 103k. Hawai‘i is 8.25% from 48k to 150k. Verdict: Hawai‘i is higher.

RE property tax: I see you don’t live on Maui and property tax is administered by county. Here’s the form: https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentC...Home/View/3188 in order to qualify for July 2018, you must have filed a full year resident tax return for 2016 (see bottom of page 1). There is no exemption for new migrants to the state unlike some other islands.

Uh. You’ve not taken into account state deductions nor what is it called SDI? Keep sharpening your pencil. My take home pay went up quite a bit from CA.

Your n of 1 is a very impressive sample size. Let me guess, you’re making exactly $90,000?

Your sample size of ZERO isn’t impressive

Across the board taxes will be lower in Maui from where poster is in LA. It is what it is.

Except I’ve posted easily aceesible data. You’ve posted what you’ve told us about your tax return.

Deductions? There are so many more in California. Renters get a tax deduction because, why should homeowners get all the perks?

I make similar and lived in Kauai and CA. We had our CPA do our taxes in both HI and CA to see what the difference was and every year we paid less overall living in HI (husband income not included). Some things cost more in CA and some in HI but those balanced out. Gas is more in HI but if you are working remotely that shouldn't be a big issue. Food is more in HI too. We spent less overall since there was less to do in forms of pay for entertainment in HI. the issue for us was going to be when our kids got older and would need to go to a private school since the local education was subpar. That was going to cost about 24k a year so in that way we are now saving a lot more in CA.

That depends on where in Hawaii you are getting your gas - I've been traveling to the Bay Area constantly since August - and the Bay Area always has higher gas prices than Oahu.

My friend who visited from San Jose said the same thing when he saw our gas prices....said he can't believe Honolulu had cheaper gas than parts of Cali.

Go on Facebook and join a few groups. That's where I find a lot of rentals.
