As locals, you have different perceptions than those of us who've only visited the island. This thread is meant to provide some insight into the initial thought/reaction locals have about different spots on the island. For example: Wailea - touristy with resorts

Here goes:

Wailea
Kihei
Lahaina
Kaanapali
Kapalua
Kahului
Hana
Wailuku

Thanks in advance!

Wailea---the only place on this list that doesn't have Public Bus Service or Bus Stops so....Wailea has no scrags or homeless living in the bushes
Wailea has no churches so....no scrags and lazy bums hanging around waiting to get free hot meals everyday....

Wailea has a bus stop right by the Wailea Shopping Center.

Wailea
Golf Resort area, lots of restaurants, nice beaches, expensive to live/eat there, lots of tourists, good walking paths, part of Kihei

Kihei
Hometown for me, dusty, crowded now, has places to eat, very hot, good beaches, a little far if going Kula/Lahaina/Paia. Used to be covered in sugar cane ash.

Lahaina
Hot like Kihei, good restaurants, kind of far to go to, hate driving over the Pali to get there, baby beach is great, Front street is always crowded but has good food, Parking sucks sometimes.

Kaanapali
Resort/Hotel area, like Wailea and expensive, good restaurants but pricey, good beach but hard to get to sometimes because of access/parking, lots of old people die at black rock every month.

Kapalua
Pretty far away but quieter, really expensive houses up there, Santana used to live here, Merrimans/Sea House/Sansei/Vino/Plantation House is all good places to eat, but pricey. Nice beaches but can get really windy, Honolua Bay

Kahului
Feels industrial, where all the big stores are (Costco, Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Macy's etc), not many great restaurants, good food trucks, Acevados,

Hana
Too far for me, Jungle, too many tourist nowadays,

Wailuku
Where I live, some areas great others not so much, old town feel, some areas very run down, a couple good spots to hike, restaurants close early, not many options to eat, government worker area (mayor/house/judges etc). Lots of new houses and neighborhoods going up, Wailuku/Kahului is one big city area, not 2 towns.

Lahaina, Maui: Tourist attraction. It was once a plantation town, now it has become a tourist attraction. They used to have the rail on Maui. Pay a fee and they take you around. All aboard. It is really neat how you have to pay a fee to see an old plantation town. This is on a rail or train. I think they call this train a locomotive train. Someone actually still builds those things. Wow.
