Hi there, I am moving to maui in less than 2 weeks and just got this idea from somebody as I’ve found shipping/moving costs are quite pricey! I don’t have too many things so sharing the cost of a shipping container would certainly be ideal! I know this is somewhat last minute, but if somebody is interested, I’m willing to ship from anywhere in California, but the destination is set on Maui.
Mahalo! I pray there is somebody out there looking to do the same!

Before you do this, ask yourself if you could live without the stuff you plan to ship. (Think of it as an extended vacation.) Often the shipping cost is higher than the value of the shipped item.
I moved to Maui 6.5 years ago with 2 suitcases and carry-ons. It was more than I needed. I also shipped my car.
From my 4-bedroom California home, I placed one bedroom set, and den furniture in storage in case I didn't like living here. (The rest I sold.)
After a two-year trial in Maui, I went home and gave away everything in storage. Each time I traveled to California, I brought back a few small, valued item like photos and dishes. Small, heavy items like flatware came over via USPS "If it fits, it ships" flat rate boxes.
Initially, it was difficult to get rid of a lifetime's accumulations but after it was gone, I felt so free!
May I suggest mainland storage for the stuff you can't carry and a re-evaluation after a year or two here.

On the flip side, there are those, such as myself - who can't imagine not shipping everything given the lack of high quality furniture - kitchen items - art - my pool table - pinball machines - tools - very little of what I shipped could have adequately been replaced in Hawaii - nothing I shipped was discarded - and I brought everything.

Before we made the decision on shipping vs. sell and re-buy, we went shopping here to see what was available, what could be ordered, and associated costs. It was an easy decision to ship most of our stuff in a container. It was much cheaper, and the selection was not even close.
Once we crossed that hurdle, we went with the largest available container (45'; tall) and actually bought additional stuff on the mainland to fill it. So far, we have not discarded anything we brought over, and if anything now wish we had brought a few additional things we opted to leave behind.

Everyone's circumstances are different. Many of us who move to Hawaii are downsizing our living space. In the O.P.'s case she is seeking someone to share a shipping container which suggests that cost is a factor. I offered advice based upon my own experience.
The places I've lived here in Maui are much smaller than my California home and already furnished. The condo I now own could not utilize the large-scale furniture that I had previously.
Gradually I am now replacing the items I purchased upon arrival.
The big problem with shipping your crap is that 8 times out of 10 you are going to want your crap back on the mainland. Unless you have extensive connections to the islands you are probably not in the best place to determine if this is a forever trip. That is one reason if you have the time and truck you can score big buying on the cheap what others have paid a fortune to ship here but won't/can't pay to get it back to the mainland.
I've done a couple of 4 X 4 pallets thru Honolulu Freight but was shipping something that I could not buy on island and then added a washer and dryer etc. that would cost me $500 more here so that savings basically paid for the shipping. I love my crap but I am not paying for more than what it is worth to go back and forth.
