It's not taboo to talk about drug addiction today. There's an entire social and political movement to end the opioid crisis and a branch of science called Addiction Medicine. There are movies and TV series dedicated to it.
Are you also trying to say that kids are not receiving drug education in schools anymore?

IMO talking about drug addiction is not taboo. BUT it can be closely related to mental illness AND mental illness is still taboo for ppl who don’t understand it, like ppl who judge homelessness without any compassion.
OP, you said something about a recent event. Did something happen to you, or someone you know? That would be a little different than no one talking about it. Maybe you circle of friends and/or family don't discuss it with YOU for whatever reason.
I'm sorry, if you need someone to talk to, but you're casting around and coming up empty. That's a very sad and lost feeling, if that's the case.
Your statement that no one wants to see or hear this is not true in general. Where I sit, people I know are extremely active in getting word out for help with addiction and mental illness. It is discussed openly.
Apparently in your immediate world that is not the case. Do you want to do something about it?
Maybe OP means she wouldn't go into certain casual social setting such as a wedding or a church picnic or work party among people she doesn't know and reveal she's a drug addict or that her child or relative is a drug addict. It comes under the category of "private". If that were me, I would only tell people who have a need to know, period. I don't tell the whole world about personal and private issues, such as health issues, financial issues, relationship problems, sex life, work issues, or anything else that's private.
That said, some people are less private than others and put it all out there. I think some people's professional life is such that revelations of this nature (drug addiction) could cause them to lose a professional license, job, or contact with certain family members. For instance, I know a woman who's not allowed to see her grandchildren anymore because of an addiction problem.
