Here's a link to arguments for and against open borders, as civilized European countries now enjoy.

Good one, Todd!

As the world 'shrinks' due to improved access to communications, more interdependence among countries, more need/desire for unrestricted movement, improved awareness of our human commonalities, less fear of intercultural association and integration, a higher awareness of interlinked economies... the 'melting pot' model which was so good for the U.S. will necessarily become the prototype for our whole planet. Some distinctions about borders will become burdensome and passé as world cultures move toward equilibrium.

Future generations will view "border security" with the same disdain as this generation views segregation and eugenics. This wall cannot barricade Google Translate. In two generations it will be in a museum - situated somewhere between the Berlin Wall, the ropes of the KKK, and doctrines of the Schutzstaffel.

Personally, I think they put that wall there just to caution the people of Mexico that Americans aren't as smart as some may imagine.

I would also like to tell you and the general public that I am one of many Americans who do not like that Wall any more than we liked the Berlin Wall and for the same reason.

To me, the Wall represents fear and hate. This world needs less and fear and hate and more love and peace.

"Tear down the wall ... tear down the wall ..."
Very good words Bostonian,
I hope to know some day more and more people thinking like you.
GOD BLESS YOU.

Just curiosity.
Be calm. Don't be nervous.

That's not what Mr. Reagan told Mr. Gorbachev.

Perhaps, but also for purely political reasons - to keep their (more anti-immigration) constituents happy and maintain their support.

As for the link, that is the worst kind of biased propaganda there is - the kind that pretends to be giving both sides. Anyone that actually reads that garbage will note that it spends the first part giving reasons for open borders followed by supporting opinions for those reasons including rebuttals in bold type for reasons against. Then the second part briefly lists reasons for closed borders followed by opinions why those reasons are invalid. At no point in that page do they try to justify the reasons for closed borders as they do for open borders and at no point do they offer rebuttal to the reasons for open borders. Blatantly biased page.

As for equilibrium, it has more to do with economic equilibrium than cultural equilibrium. Indeed, borders will be unnecessary as the world moves toward economic equilibrium as that will eliminate most of the need to immigrate in the first place. Or at least, the immigration will be roughly offsetting. That is why those European examples have open borders - they are generally at economic equilibrium.
