Buying a New Car in Mexico (pesos, tax, price, cars)

Hello, I havent been to Mexico for many years and have only touched the border towns...when you travel to the major cities, what do you think the cost for a new car is in Mexico compared to the United States... is it about the same cost as the U.S. and is the currency $'s for large transactions?

I'd like to know is they mark up cars or deal on them as is done here in the U.S. and if the cost of a new vehicle is generally more expensive than the U.S. specifically for a higher end car. Im not looking to buy a temporary car for a trip.

Same models (Accord vs Accord) will be more expensive in Mexico than the US, maybe there will be some exceptions to this but in general that is the case. However you cannot buy the car in the US and take it to Mexico that easily (unless is for touristic purposes) as you will need to pay taxes to register it in Mexico which will make the car even more expensive than if you bought it directly in Mexico.

For example, the Civic LX is 21,250 in Mexico where in the US is 17,755. A BMW X3 is marked at 44,300 where in the us is 36,000.

There are some models that are not made/sold in the US that are significantly cheaper than any car in the US, for example the VW Pointer or the GM Chevy, among others, but these cars are definitely not high end as you mention.

Cars from a dealership are negotiable but to a limited extent in Mexico, in general I've seen that prices bend more here in the US than what they do in Mexico.

Wow, so your talking about 30% more for the same model BMW.
Do you know if this is standard throughout mexico? You wouldnt happen to know of a website that lists new car prices would you? I couldnt anything at all.

I was thinking of importing a car from Europe however the exchange rate is not to our advantage. So I thought Mexico may be an option to avoid the 45% currency conversion cost. But based on your info, I would end up paying close to it anyways in a generally more expensive sticker price.

For the BMW I took the info from the Mexican website for example:

A website that lists most models and seems to be accurate is

Autos usados, Autos seminuevos, Autos nuevos, Compra y Venta de Autos - Autocosmos.com

Under the section "Autos nuevos" (right in the middle) you will see a list of many brands, just click on it and it will display the available cars per brand and its price range in pesos (some in dollars). If you click "Todas las marcas" it will display all available brands in Mexico.

I'm no expert, I just know models that are sold in Mexico and US are generally more expensive in Mexico. People from Mexico will still buy them in Mexico because of the tax when importing the car.

I have no idea if there is a tax when taking a car from Mexico into the US, but if there is that will just make it even more expensive...
