That's a lot of firepower on display. Heavy and lite machine guns, heavy sniper rifles, grenade launchers not to mention the small arms seem to be standardized and the guys using them look well disciplined. Armored 4x4 trucks. I suspect there's other gear such as RPGs around too.

This is something else. A force like that with good logistics, training and command and control could dominate an entire region. Even US Marines would have a fight on their hands trying to take these guys out in a guerrilla war.

Nah, is just propaganda, the first trucks looks well equipped but as the camera passes the last ones are very basic equipment, these sicarios live in constant terror of being killed by their bosses, rivals, or federal forces, they have no power and discipline comparable to that of the Mexican Navy and Army not to mention US Marines...

On todays battlefields it doesn't come down to brute force, it's a lot more complex than that. Being hidden, hitting and running is how you survive. It's a well known fact that a group of soldiers 100 strong staying in place for 30 minutes is a dead group of soldiers.

I would hope you're correct. I also agree that in a fair fight Marines would win outright but then there's no such thing as a fair fight is there?

The fact that these guys exist tells me a hell of a lot and what screams the loudest is they are tough enough to be there.

I can't believe anyone is impressed by that as a military force.

They have a few vehicles that are basically pickup trucks with metal sheeting welded onto them, then a bunch of 4x4s, all with a bunch of undisciplined untrained people in camo yelling slogans and puffing their chests out.

lol

To be clear, these folks aren't ideologically driven like Muslim extremists or communist guerillera fighting for their ideals or country. They fight because they are paid to fight, and the first time they see one of those claptrap technicals with six of their buddies in it explode thanks to a drone they never even saw their interest in bearing arms for this "cause" of protecting narco trafficking territory would wane rapidly.

Agreed on the fact they would just melt back into society if they started getting targeted by a tactical group with an edge such as drones or even the marines. But they don't have to worry much about this because the bribes have paid everyone off so they don't get targeted much and when they do they get notified by their sources.

Because they aren't a standing army, same reason US army had such a hard time fighting Viet Cong despite having better equipment and training.

This isn't really true anymore.

Some of the founding members of the Zetas were former Mexican SF, but that was a 31 guys and over 20 years ago. It's not like those same former soldiers are still carrying out operations or forming the backbone of the organization anymore, the last of the original 31 to have any major influence was Heriberto Lazcano who was killed back in 2012.

No, it wouldn't be a fair fight. The Marines would have satellite and air support.

Camo painted pickup trucks and stolen military weapons, and uniforms, don't make an army. The video is not really that impressive. I very much doubt that those ford trucks are truly armored as it would take serious modifications to the suspensions to carry the weight, and these are not military vehicles. Maybe for handguns but rifle fire would punch holes in them real easy. These are what they call "technicals" in africa and the middle east, they been using them for years - made for quick hit an run, they won't stand for a real engagement with Mexican military. They really need to steal some real military APCs. In Africa the real military killed a technical (and the operators) by simply driving over it with his APC.

But hey they have matching camo patters, I guess that's impressive.
