Why can't people in Miami (or south Florida, for that matter) follow some basic etiquette rules? There seems to be no more people of character any more. What ever happened to returning your shopping cart to its proper location? Turn off your high beams at night in traffic, hold the door open for folks behind you, say please and thank you, use your turn signal, and please, please, PLEASE, why can't you stay off your frigg'n speaker phone in public?

I know why. The rules simply don't apply to Floridians.

That is like saying without Broward/Palm Beach (both heavily D) FL would be very red. It is only a few cities/county's that are blue, otherwise FL is mostly red with super majorities in both the state House/Senate, R governor, two R US senators, etc.

As to why the OP seems to have a love/hate relationship with Miami, I am not sure. Politically they sound on the left talking about rent control, tenants rights, etc. so if they are a snowbird, Broward/Palm Beach would better suit them politically, and they also have fewer Latins.

Nowadays, Miami is basically the number one destination for many Latin Americans, especially for Brazilians, Colombians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, and Caribbeans such as Haitians, Jamaicans, Bahamians, and Trinidadians. I've also predicted that South FL will also attract more Arabs and more Africans in the near future due to it's tropical weather plus Miami is the closest major American city to Africa as opposed to NY, DC, and Atlanta, so I expect Miami will capitalize on it's closer distance to African points such as Accra, Algiers, Cairo, Casablanca, Lagos, and Cape Town as well as the weather and tropical climate.

It's almost as if NY City were part of Mississippi.
Miami is basically not just a "tropical, Latin version of NY", but it's basically the NY of the South due to a lot of financial firms moving from NY & Chicago, as well as a emerging high tech center due to some firms moving from Silicon Valley due to CA's high business taxes and high COL, as well as Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft opening up their Latin American HQ's in Miami.

FL is getting red because a lot of Latinos such as Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans have experienced either communism or socialism and since the Dems seem more sympathetic to those movements, a lot of those affected groups don't want communism or socialism here in America because of what they or their ancestors went through in those countries.

If anything, the only region where it's the Deep South is the Northern Panhandle and Big Bend areas of FL. Miami and Orlando have nothing to do with the old American South, as both those cities never existed during the Confederacy.

This makes no sense at all.

I take Spanish class every Saturday for 4 hours at Miami Dade College. I love the Spanish speaking vibe.

Maybe to you it doesn't make any sense, but from an economic standpoint, Miami, along with NYC, are the closest cities to Africa because both cities are along the Atlantic Ocean, and since Africa has some of the fastest growing economies in the world right now, it only makes sense for Miami to have connections to Africa. Cities such as Casablanca, Cairo, Accra, and Lagos are closer to NYC than Miami, while cities south of the Equator such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Luanda, and Brazzaville is where Miami has the advantage since it's the closest American city to those points.

Also, FL has the second largest black American (domestic and foreign) population in raw numbers, only TX has more as of today (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...can_population), and since FL has the largest Caribbean American population in the US as of 2010 and growing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_I...cans#Locations), and many Caribbean Americans are of mostly or partial African descent, it's only natural that Miami establish ties to the continent of Africa meaning both subsaharan Africa and northern Africa.

For starters, there's already a consulate representing Sierra Leone based in Miami, and I've heard that there's a Moroccan consulate planning on being opened sometime, as there's already direct flights between Miami and Casablanca via Royal Air Maroc. Currently, Miami-Dade want to establish ties to Asia (Tokyo, Taipei, and Hong Kong) and Australia, but in the not too distant future, it's going to be necessary to have some sort of connections to Africa just to be globally relevant.

You said Miami is closest to Africa “as opposed to NYC and DC.”

And that makes absolutely no sense at all, regardless of any wall of text you may post. Miami is not closer to Africa than NYC and DC.

Whether Miami is the closest to Africa or second closest, either way, it would be pretty short sighted for South FL not to have some sort of connection (cultural, economic, financial, logistic, etc.) to the continent. Miami-Dade is desperately trying to have an air link to Far East Asia and Australia via MIA, and I'm with whatever it takes to have air service to Tokyo, Taipei, and Hong Kong, but even though Africa does have a lot of underdeveloped lands, and Africa is the poorest continent on the globe, there are pockets of economic growth in certain countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, and Morocco.

While the northern hemisphere in Africa may be closer to NY than Miami, I'm wagering that the southern portion is a lot closer to Miami. And much of Africa is in the tropics, and if one were to immigrate to America, the old guard cities of New York and Chicago would make the typical African feel homesick, but Sunbelt cities like Houston and Miami would be perfect.
