It would be if that were happening, which it isn't.

First off, nobody in the United States can be required to become a member of a union as a condition of employment. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar.

Second, unions have a legally enforceable duty of fair representation that applies to all members of the bargaining unit, regardless of union membership. Whether it involves grievances or wages, hours, and working conditions, nonmembers are entitled to get all the services from the union that members receive. What they are not entitled to is to get those services without paying anything for them. What Right to Work for Less legislation does is destroy unions but making it impossible for them to collect the dues they need to keep the doors open and to bargain on behalf of all the workers.

I'm no fan of unions, but this is clearly a step to reduce the influence of unions in the workplace. The south has long been rather anti-union, and corporations that have also been anti-union have tended to locate there. Hey, some corporations treat their employees well--with or without unions--and some take advantage of their employees in any way they can. So-called "Right-to-Work" laws are just part of the formula for giving corporations the upper hand in dealing with their employees.

Except that a huge amount of the union's dues collected go to support political campaigns and the fat cats at the top are making exhorbitant wages. Do some research. Very little of the union dues go to keep the doors open and bargain on behalf of the workers. Maybe 70 years ago, but those days are long gone. If they would just quit donating to political campaigns they would more than make up whatever dues money they stand to lose and they would be getting back to why they were actually formed in the first place.

But if someone wants to work at a store that is unionized (e.g. Meijer) - they don't have the option of not having union dues withheld from their paycheck. This will give the individual the right to decide whether to contribute the dues. If 100% of workers believe the union is worth the dues - they'll contribute. If not, the union needs to prove how it's relevant and why it's worth the money. Think of it as nothing more than political action committees that ask employers ask their employees to contribute to. No one forces you too, but if you support the mission, you have that right.

This had a lot more to do with Bob King's power grab than it did DeVos or Americans for Prosperity.

Snyder basically told King that he would leave Right to Work alone and accepted the status quo as it related to unions in Michigan. King breached that with Proposal 2 and all bets were off.

Angry union members should send their complaints directly to King at Solidarity House.

Not likely until the urban Obamabots who pushed Michigan into the blue column of the Presidential race decide to get out and vote in off-year elections, which they, by and large, don't bother to do. Ask them if state level politics matter, then ask them if they even know who their state representative is, then expect more of what we have now at the state level.

I remember seeing these same slugs clogging up the line at my precinct in November. They came out of the woodwork and had obviously not voted since 2008 since most of them were at the wrong precinct. Amazing how the only thing that gets them out to the polls is a candidate that has the same skin color as them (and hopes of bringing back some of that "bacon" as Joann Watson calls it).
