Been stationed at three that were part of the 1988 and 1991 BRAC: Williams AFB, AZ, which I also grew up near, England AFB, LA and George AFB, CA. Also have flown civilian out of the old Ardmore AFB, OK, Mathis/Carr Field (San Angelo), Childress AAF, TX and Wolters AFB (Mineral Wells, TX).
I grew up near, and my dad worked at, McClellan Air Force base near Sacramento, CA. Visited him on base numerous times, and went to the base 'open-house' events many times.
I also remember very nice gate guards that let me use their phone when my car broke down a block or so from the back entrance
It's since been closed and is now a business park I believe.
Alconbury in England, Bergstrom in Austin TX, and Pease in Portsmouth NH.
I know rationally that we don't need all those bases any more, but when I hear of the closing of a base where I used to live, I do feel like a piece of my childhood is gone.
I didn't grow up near a facility but we had ties to Ft. McClellan, Al and were stationed in Frankfurt am main, FRG. I was an MP on the Abrams complex (V Corps HG) and my DH was an road MP in Frankfurt(284th MP- Gibbs Kaserne).
I am really sad about Frankfurt and we visited the area and while it was so familiar it just felt so strange.
Back in the 70's i had MAJOR surgery on my spine at Westover SFB. It seemed modern, and extensive.
Hard to believe it is gone.
I was permanently assigned to Griffiss AFB at the time. Closed.
Spent a LOT of time at Wilford Hall Medical Ceneter...at Lackland...still there?
Rehab and evaluation at Wright Patterson...still open i think.
Got hurt at Tyndall.....they are still there too.
