Pvt. Arthur Jacobson was seeking cover in the snow behind a tank moving slowly through the wooded hills of Belgium's Ardennes, German bullets whizzing by.
That was when he lost his best friend and Bazooka team partner to sniper fire. “They couldn't hit him, he shouted," Jacobson said wistfully. “Those were his last words.”
The recollection of his worst day in the Battle of the Bulge still haunts him, three quarters of a century later during the first return of the 95-year-old to the battlefield.
I think I read somewhere that Gen. McAuliffe's response to the Germans was actually something a bit more, shall we say, colorful, than "NUTS" (think of something starting with F) but the press released a cleaned-up interpretation that they could reprint in the newspapers of that time.
Side note here: Why Military Times (independent, not associated with the military, same owners as USA Today I beleive) decided to even mention Trump, as it has no relevance to the topic, is very strange. Really a cheap shot.
If you ever get a chance, go to Luxembourg. The American cemetery there is George Patton’s burial site along with just over 5,000 troops. A very special place.
My wife is from Brazil and I wasn’t sure how she’d react during our visit. At the tiny chapel there, she got down on her knees and offered a prayer for their lives and sacrifices. As a vet, I was more than moved by her gesture.
Then, take a train to Diekirch which is home to the National Museum of Military History, abbreviated to MNMH. Phenomenal presentations on both WWI and WWII and American’s role in both. Spoiler alert: they pretty much wore out their welcome during WWI but were revered during WWII. There’s also a local guide who is an expert in the Battle of the Bulge. Contact me if you’d like his contact info.
I'm going to agree with the other poster that it was the F word. I can't imagine anyone in combat facing a life or death situation saying Nuts.
It would have more likely been formed in a question " Is he F***ing Nuts?" but I wouldn't actually put it passed him to actually say it in the way they have it in the movie. It would have been short for "he can go smell my n***."
