I am trying to establish whether or not I was at Camp Legune for 30 days or more. I am wondering if the DD-214 would tell me that. I was just a Marine corps reservist but did my MOS training at Lejune. I was recently talking to a neighbor and he told me that due to the water problems at Lejune while I was there that I might be entitled to VA medical care. Before I apply I want to find out how long I was there.
Yes, this is where that type of information will be. I have kept all of my PCS orders, TDY orders, deployment orders. That is a huge stack in a couple large boxes over the course of nearly 30 years. I even have my original order that sent me from the Dallas MEPS to Lackland.
I wish I would’ve kept all my travel vouchers too, but I didn’t. That would have added boxes and boxes of papers, though.
So I’m ready for anything. I was sent in to Japan after the tsunami, so I’m ready to file on that if anything happens later, but I think I’ll be fine as my exposure was pretty minimal, at least I think.
But I’ve been sent to some pretty toxic situations all over the world. Environmental responsibility in the military just didn’t happen back in the day like it does now (for the most part). Asbestos in many of the buildings I worked at, lead in the ground from firing ranges, drinking water problems all over the place.
As far as the water, I never trusted what the “experts” said. I’m not going to get into the specifics, but there was this one base (not in the Middle East, but not in the US either) where we would deploy to a lot. I’ve been there at least 10 times. Anyway, they would always have bio environmental test the water (I think they are the ones that check the water?), or whatever office does that, and they would always say year after year that the water was fine and it checked out ok and within limits.
The first time I was at this base, I took a drink of water and it tasted horrifically bad, worst water I’ve ever tasted. I spit it out, and never drank it again. I would only use bottled water. However, most people would just suffer through it and drink the regular water. Sure enough, a few years later, all of a sudden the water was deemed undrinkable. I had to laugh, my first thought was, ‘“ What took you guys so long to determine that?”. So the later years of my active duty career, whenever we would go there, bottled water was provided to us, I no longer had to buy it.
But I often wonder if some of those people who trusted the base water might end up having problems later in life? I sure hope not.
As the others have mentioned you will need to look elsewhere for the info you need.
DH & I were at McClellan for 4 months and he has been thinking about looking into things.
We've kept all of our paperwork (it was nice to see our original orders sending us to Germany after OSUT - it sends a little shock seeing my name prior to marrying DH).
On top of all of the orders, etc we have all of our LESs! God, we are old!
The reason I want the information is my neighbor had a hard time getting his approval so I want to have all the information before applying.
Right now I am paying close to 900 dollars per month for health insurance despite having no health issues or medications. I am thinking VA health care might be an option to cover me until I hit medicare age. I would just get a catastrophic policy if I could but since the ACA passed they no longer allow them in my case.
Any idea where I can request my Official Military Personnel File?
