Where to stay near Cocoa beach FL? (military, apartment complex, houses)

If we're looking for a clean, non tourist beach with some waves, where would u recommend we stay? Is there a military hotel nearby that would allow us to walk to the beach and other areas for food, etc?
I surfaced at Port Canaveral many times, though I did not take lodging anywhere ashore during those port visits.
Cocoa Beach is only 6 miles from Port Canaveral.
I did a quick search for MWR lodging in the area, that search came up with these possibilities. Your military ID card should get you substantial discounts for lodging.

Not on the beach but it's right across A1A, The Dolphin Inn just north of Patrick AFB. I lived there for two months when I was TDY at Patrick and it was a furnished apartment complex. Close to everything.
