Save the signs folks. They will go back after the 2022 elections if they are not taken off the trash truck by first sergeants to take to their hunting camp on a lake or mountain somewhere. You can try to disrespect our heritage, but you can't take it away. Our heritage will live on.
History is a part of our lives. A pen stroke and spending a fortune to swap out street signs does not change it.
You are 100% correct; no history is being changed or erased at all. None of these bases are going to have a Wikipedia article with a "?" in the "Base Origins" section. There isn't going to be a base heritage museum with a picture and plaque inside that says "This base was constructed in 1942. From the time the first plan was drawn and first shovel of dirt thrown it did not have a name. It the year 2022 it was finally bestowed a name: Fort Cavazos."
The name being changed, and the righting of a wrong, is now part of history.

Yeah.
"But! But! History!" is a vapid argument.
There's no Fort Benedict Arnold. There's no Benedict Arnold Day, no Benedict Arnold statues. Yet after Washington, he's the most well-known American general officer of the War of Independence.
Such things are about honoring. But the people who feel an overriding need to honor traitors never want to admit that they're arguing in favor of bestowing honor upon the memory of traitors, so they invent other rationales.
The idea that "they have more important things to deal with" is just an excuse. The Department of Defense is a pretty big organization, and they can do more than one thing at a time.
I bet the United States is the only country that has military bases named to honor traitors and losers. It is long past time to make this change.

Well, West Germany did have an Adams DDG named for Rommel.

Fair argument. So time is practically limitless in large organizations is what we’re hearing. So the committee on bases being renamed could have instead worked on a safe, less risky exit from Afghanistan. Lord knows you had enough rank (retired and current) in the base renaming committee. This ad hoc committee traveled extensively to each base to research, visit, and conduct countless interviews. Total cost? Who knows. Maybe it’s wrapped in the $65+ millions that has been estimated on renaming.
But it was worth it because now all bases with offensive history are rectified. Wait, there are more?!? Yes. Countless names of bases, ships, and air platforms were ignored that still have offensive names with derogatory history…. Hypocrisy lives. However, THIS is the pendulum for recruiting! Get ready for the floods at recruiting stations!

It won't cost any more than the next fighter plane that crashes. Not significant money in DoD terms.
Looking into the actual process of how those bases were named, it wasn't so much about honoring Confederate figures as it was about appeasing Southern Congressmen to vote for military appropriations. It was always political. It's still political.

Every conflict has a winner and a loser. To call those who did not choose your side traitors takes - why?
Have you looked at the classic draft dogers of the Vietnam Area and at those currently in positions of elected representatives? Their chice is acceptable?
