Spent one year of my Navy life at Kefflavik Iceland. If we wanted to leave the base, we had to wear uniform. Assigned to 'air freight'. 24 on 24 off, alt weekends. Christmas time C-141 and C-130 loose cargo, not on pallets, 80,000 lbs. 'Braniff' Airlines using 727's had contract at McGuire AFB Cargo on pallets but our 'K' loader was always in repair shop. Rain and snow fell sideways with 40mph constant wind. Winter time saw sun for 4 hours on the horizon. Summer time saw semi-darkness for 4 hours. Warmest day was 64 degrees in August. Landscape is lava fields, no trees. It was a miserable year. But I lucked out and got transfered to a Recon squadron at Sanford FL NAS that just got off the USS Enterprise from the Gulf of Tonkin tour. Nine months of pleasure and I got out.
Wow. We loved Iceland. My husband was with the 56th RQS. Our original assignment was for 2 yrs. We extended one year, then six more months (because that was all they would let us have). I am so sad they closed the base. I'd love to go back.
We used to go to Kaffi Duus for soup in bread bowls and coffee on the weekends. I remember anything you ordered you could get an egg on it.
When we were there, we were told to dress like Europeans off base for persec and to take the base stickers off our cars if we had one on the windshield.
I don't know about being stationed at any place other than where I work as an AF civilian, but I have been tdy to numerous bases. I liked Eglin, Langley and Robins as far as the locations, things to do, accomodations etc. Hanscom is terrible, and so is Wright-Patt. Pease was a nice base before it was closed.
It wasn't me, but my dad always said Thule, Greenland was his worst peace-time station.
He usually said "Thule. Do I need to explain why?"
Did you know that, according to Greek cartographers, "Thule" was the most northern region of the inhabitable world?
I'll bet your Dad would agree with that, though he may disagree with the term "inhabitable."
