There's an old movie called American Graffiti that portrays cruising pretty well.
It was especially popular in small towns where there was nothing else to do.
Basically teenagers hanging out and driving back and forth on the same street.

I grew up in a small town and we did that too, but I don't remember ever having a name for it.

I don't remember what we called it, but "cruising" sounds familiar.
They thought it was a nuisance at the time, but in hindsight, I think the kids are better off doing that than whatever it is they do now. Much more social.

I used to cruise hwy 100 back in the 80s and can remember the very first crackdown. I can recall cruising the first week I got my drivers license. Cruising is one of my favorite memories of the time, despite the fact I was always there in a slow POS car. I never understood why the crackdown was necessary as the traffic on hwy 100 at its worst was no worse than a great many roads all over the country during rush hour; I guess West Allis cops had nothing better to do.
