Downtown Minneapolis is in trouble due to all the retail closures and skywalk debacle of not being torn down. This downtown is dying right before your eyes despite current development unless the city figures out what to do.

It's in a weird spot for sure, but I don't think it's any worse than it's been in the past 20 years, really. It does have the catch-22 right now that it's sort of a place where people come for one thing and then leave, as opposed to sticking around for a while (plays, concerts, sporting events, etc.). It's pretty busy M-F 9-5 while everyone's at work, and then pretty dead nights and weekends. They've been working on the Nicollet Mall re-do for a while now, but that's paradoxically hurt some businesses in the meantime. Hopefully they can get some taprooms and other smaller businesses going once everything's good to go. Right now downtown's not much fun to walk around; that's what they're hoping to fix, because right now it definitely seems like most people would rather go to Uptown, Northeast, etc.

The Central Business District portion of Downtown is hurting retail wise, yes (and so are many other CBD's with competition from online shopping). Downtown Minneapolis as a whole is hurting and dying? Hardly. If you have ever been in the North Loop, Downtown East, the Mill District, Loring Park, St. Anthony, and look at the demographic trends you would say otherwise.

Ain't enough since they're not downtown but adjacent to downtown; nice try sugarcoating your downtown!

Case in point: When Downtown Detroit was at its worst, Greetown and Midtown were just fine. When Downtown L.A. was a no go zone after dark in the 90's, Little Tokyo, Chinatown and civic center area were fine along with Broadway street. It's not a good example of a thriving downtown when its core is sick! The same goes for Atlanta. Its downtown is moribund but has 5 point, east downtown and Midtown doing well. Just take a look at Oakland when its downtown was really bad. Lake Merritt, Chinatown and Jack London Sq were doing well.

U'm not sure what it is like in downtown PDX but I know on weekends it is busy and we have a mall right there in the middle plus many bars . So I think it stays busy down there even after dark.

There is a large homeless population too in the downtown area.

Pretty sure you've not been here. Downtown East, the Mill District, and Loring Park are all parts of downtown Minneapolis. Nice troll effort though.

I'll take seriously the idea that downtown Minneapolis is 'in trouble' when people are no longer investing big money in it. It's easy to spout off in a forum- listen to those who put their money where their mouths are:

The same thing with L.A. Detroit, Oakland, Houston, Atlanta and others when their downtown was in the dumps. Yes, I been there, and I don't like what I saw. I stayed at the Marriott in the heart of this downtown. Downtown East has potential but not there yet as they finish off the stadium and two Wells Fargo tower. Loring Park is not really downtown but beside it. The downtown core is sad.
