When do the trees bloom in Minnesota? (live, property)

I haven't lived in Minnesota for very long, and I'd like to know when the trees will start blooming and turning green. At this point in winter, I'm getting tired of looking out at the boring, dormant landscape, and it would be nice to see some green sometime soon.

Depends on the winter but usually mid May.

Plant more coniferous trees on your property, that helps a bit. I like White Pine, Balsam Fir, Norway Spruce, etc. Yes, it will start greening up by mid to late May.

It goes from winter to spring in a week, blink it and you miss it.

Like others have said, the green up really does depend on the winter. Back in the spring of 2012, crabapples were blooming at the end of March! In a normal year, however, mid-May is when this usually occurs. Rhododendrons and azaleas usually bloom in late April. Catalpas start flowering in mid-June.

You'll start seeing the first signs of green at the beginning of April if you look hard enough. Take a walk in the woods the first weekend in April and you'll see some things leafing out ever so slowly.

I agree with jennifat that it depends on the year. In 2012, spring came very early - snow was completely gone by mid/end of March, and I think trees were blooming in late March. That year, I went to NW MN for a funeral in mid-April, and the weather up there was beautiful/warm and the trees seemed pretty much filled out. But that was unusually early. On the other hand, last year, spring came unusually late; I don't think our trees really started blooming until end of April/early May. We went on a trip to the north shore of Lake Superior in late May, and from what I remember, trees were just starting to bud there at that time. Very unusual to see that little that late.

I would say most years, you will start seeing things green up in early to mid April (in the Twin Cities area). It seems to not come too far after the end (or rapid dwindling) of the snow cover. If the current forecast holds up, I wonder if this year might be on the early side, though maybe not quite as early as 2012.

So, since this winter wasn't too bad by MN standards, I guess we could possibly see a little green before Late April/Early May (especially with the forecasted 50s and possibly 60s in the near future). Am I right?

maybe a week early due to next week's warm spell

but overall, it has been a normal winter so I doubt the trees will bloom super early. the soil has to thaw, and that happens last.
