I am self employed, and I am looking to move someplace where the cost of living is more affordable than where I currently live (CA). A friend of mine recommended two places, one of them being Hattiesburg MS area, specifically Petal. However, my concern is the reputation of racism and lack of tolerance thereof. I am white, and my husband is black. We also have children. My friend claims MS is less racist than the north.

We would like to buy a home for no more than 200k. We want someplace that is safe, and it appears when looking up the crime statistics, it would be safe. We would also want to live someplace friendly like my current town. I would stay there, but I can't afford to buy here. Did my friend make a good recommendation, or do you disagree? Thank you

I would tend to agree that Petal is probably a fine choice for affordability and safety. And these days I would agree the Hattiesburg area is a tolerant place. Another nearby option to consider might be the Biloxi area. Several military installations bring people from all over the country. It's definitely affordable and overall it's quite safe. I would say it's just a bit larger and more diverse than Hattiesburg and thus might be more comfortable for you. The race thing on the Coast definitely won't be an issue.

Agreed with the coast as being the better option, but you will want to check on insurance prices.
The problem with Petal is that there's nothing to really do there. Hattiesburg has more retail shopping, but you will find yourself traveling to the coast often just to mix things up. There's only so much hunting, fishing, golfing, watching USM lose football games... that you can do in Hattiesburg before the lack of entertainment takes it's toll. Check out myhattisburg forums for more insider information. If you do decide on Hattiesburg, Oak Grove is where you want to be at.

Summers in Hattiesburg can be brutal. Very hot and humid.

Why Mississippi? With a mixed family, absolutely not.

Check out Lafayette or Little Rock or Louisville, or Tallahassee.
