My teenage age son and I need a cheap temp place to stay in or around Missoula ASAP. I keep seeing this ad on craigslist for $1 Guest Cabin linked to couchsurfing.com site. Anyone know what this is all about? They sent me an "application" but there are approx 100 strange questions on it and I don't want to just waste my time. Thanks.

I would be wary. There are a lot of scams on Craigslist. Don't answer any questions that seem sketchy.

I just sent you a private message with some housing ideas.

The "couchsurfing" thing is real, tho how they plan to make money on it escapes me:

I use Craigslist and that $1 usually means that there are various prices on the items being sold behind the heading of the ad because of the way the site is set up, for selling things at a fixed price obo. Now that it's fall, a lot of flat landers are heading back south for the winter and a few of them like using house sitters instead of closing up the cabin or house. You might look into that if your handy with repairs. Good luck.

It sure sounds like a scam to me. Toss the application and find something else in my opinion.

Craigslist is so full of scams anymore it is almost not worth using.

I've read both of your posts and first of all, sorry that you lost your home in California. This is definately a stressful time for you and your family. In Montana we hear about how desperate the situations are down in the southwest/west coast on a daily basis. Since you are a resident of that state, aren't there social services set up for your particular circumstance already that can help? Are there any friends or relatives you can stay with there?

I know you've mentioned you want to move to Missoula but jobs are pretty tight there right now. It sounds like your determined to make the trip anyway and we all wish you a lot of luck.

There are a few caring people on the forum that live in the Missoula area and as your post gets read over time someone is going to think of a solution for you.

Let us know when your getting ready to leave California.

I've looked at couchsurfing before. The prices vary. $15-20 a night (per person) is pretty common. It is more typically used by young adults but others may use it too.

Might be inaccessible without a snowcat, have outdoor plumbing, no electric and a wood stove. At that, in the winter, I would find something else.

Sort of like a hostel, I would guess.
